Edward Scissorhands dance production by Matthew Bourne - saw it last night. and WOW. it blew me away. so freakin amazing.
I'm a huuuuuuuuge fan of the film anyway, so if they'd have screwed it up (which they could have done easily) I'd have been mortified, but they did it SO well. 10 million times better than I ever thought it could be.
The Danny Elfman music from the film was played by an orchestra under the stage, which just completely made the production. The music in the film is just so...I dunno how to say it other than "magical" I guess, and really poignant at parts - so with the absence of speech, just the dance/mime/music went together so well and really got the tears welling up at some points. hehe.
The SETS. Oh sweet jesus. They were really really amazing - the old mansion he's created in, and the suburbia of multicoloured houses and oh. twas immense.
The guy who played Edward was called Sam Archer i think it said in the programme - now i thought he'd be a bit rubbish compared to Johnny depp who is an amazing actor and created such a unique character - but NO, he was amazing, had the movements/innocent face expression and mannerisms down to a tee. And boy could he dance. Really really admire him. And that leather suit. looked like a bitch to get into. and out of. hmm i'd help him. *ahem*
I really cant contain everything about it that was awesome, cause a)i'd explode and b)it'd be a novel rather than a livejournal entry.
But seriously, you get the idea. freakin rocked.
The whole thing had really really funny bits in it, but with funny parts, come sad parts :(
The bit i particularly thought was amazing, was when he was chased back to his mansion, and Kim followed him - then they kissed and danced and he held her and ohhh..and the expression on his face, and the knowing that it could never happen and ohhh *sniff*
If that bit wasn't enough to get people welling up, then the part where he stabs the jock guy, and everyone mobs him and he disappears, leaving only a pair of scissors behind :( awww *sniff*
and THEN when the old version of Kim has the scissors - and he walks on in the very background and you're just like "HE'S BEHIND YOOOU, GO AND GEEEEET HIIIIIIIIIMMMM!!! NOOOOOO!" *crying commences* :p
and another thing i loved, was that they didn't come out of character to take their bows at the end.
everyone came on, bowed, and then we were all "oooo where's edward?"
and then he came out really tentatively and looked really confused and sad as to why everyone was applauding, which then turned to his really sweet little bemused smile and then it snowed on him and we were all standing up clapping....and then at the front where we were - they poured snow on us toooooo! awwwwww and with the music and happy little edward on his own on the stage - was so magical and really poignant! loved it so much. SO MUCH.
want to see it again. haha.
anywho. man that was a lot of writing. but yeah - you get the idea - IT ROCKS.
there's the man himself. Well done. you rock Mr Archer.*girly squealing and saying awwwwwwww*
i'll shut up now.
